About the PoetHaving grown up in Portland with memories pre-dating I-5, moving to San Francisco before Portland became a popular place for fleeing from elsewhere, returning to Portland with strange poetic tendencies struggling to locate poetically in a locale no longer local, a non- native native species, a returning Salmon full of nutrients for a watershed that no longer exists. The bartender in a silver mining ghost town once said: "If you're a writer you can do your writing anywhere." When asked if he'd ever seen ghosts he answered matter of factly: "Yes. Sometimes at night after the bar is closed and I'm cleaning up I can hear customer voices." Later that night while settling into my sleeping bag I thought: "I hope I don't wake up screaming." |
