A Prelude lasting 30 minutes or until the ceremony begins, composed of a medley of airs and tone poems. A favorite song or traditional air can be included here, or used as special music later in the ceremony. The prelude ends as the mothers are seated, or as the men of the wedding party position themselves, and the music becomes more festive in preparation for the processional. A well-recognized piece at this point such as "Morning Has Broken" can also serve as a cue to the bridal party that the processional is about to begin.
For a small wedding party, or a short aisle, only one march is needed, unless the "Bridal March from Lohengrin" (Here Comes the Bride) is used. In that case, or for larger wedding parties, a second march is often used for everyone preceding the bride. Other marches suitable for the harp include
- A Celtic Wedding March (trad.)
- Ode to Joy (from Beethoven's Symphony #9)
- Trumpet Tune (J. Clarke)
- Eleanor Plunkett (T.O'Carolan)
- Morning Has Broken (trad)
- Kate Dwyer (Cait Ni Dhuibhir) (trad)
- The Graceful Young Woman (J. Turner)
During the ceremony, solo music may be used at various times, such as during a candle-lighting or other special part of the ceremony. Or a favorite piece of music can be used alone simply for its beauty or special meaning to the couple, perhaps during or after a poem or other reading.
Music for a Catholic Mass must be specially coordinated for each service, in consultation with the priest.
Another march, usually less stately that the Processional, such as "Carolan's Dowry," or one of the other marches above. After the march, several other pieces in the same festive mood will be used to continue the music until all of the guests have left the area.
During the cocktail hour or while your guests are dining, the harp provides a lovely accompaniment. Discreet amplification is provided by pickups inside the harp body, to ensure that the music is audible over the sounds of the festivities. Outdoor events are fine, but the harp does need shelter from direct sun and any rain.
The music is chosen to suit each occasion from a repertoire based on my original arrangements of traditional & contemporary Celtic music and my own compositions in that tradition. This is augmented by selected classical, contemporary, and seasonal or special occasion musical selections. Romantic music for a Victorian style wedding is a particular specialty, which is lovely in a garden setting.
