1. Backing up the Registry [45 min]

The registry consists of two binary files, SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT, stored in the \WINDOWS directory
• When Windows 98 makes a registry backup, these two files are archived into a compressed Cabinet (.CAB) file and the .CAB file is stored in the \WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP directory. The successive registry backup archives are numbered RB000.CAB, RB001.CAB, and so on.
• You can make a manual registry backup by running the SCANREG utility from either Windows or DOS.
• If something has gone seriously wrong with the System Registry, Windows 98 will automatically attempt to repair or restore it from a previously saved backup archive.
• If you are having Windows problems, but the operating system still boots, you can manually restore a previously-saved registry backup archive. To do this, you must start the computer in MS-DOS Mode, not in the Windows 98 interface.
  
  Press F8 when the computer starts and choose "Boot to a Command Prompt:", or choose "Restart in MS-DOS Mode" from the Windows 98 Shutdown menu
  
  At the C:\> prompt, enter the command SCANREG. Choose View Backups from the menu and choose a dated registry archive to restore.
• Note: Windows 95 does not offer the Registry Restore feature. Users can manually copy the SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT files out of the \WINDOWS directory, if they wish to create Windows 95 Registry backups.

Windows 98 is sold in two editions Upgrade and Full

The upgrade editions can migrate a Windows 3.x computer to Windows 95 or 98, or upgrade a Windows 95 computer to Windows 98.

The full edition can upgrade a computer running DOS versions 3 to 6.x to Windows 95 or 98.

To install Windows 95/98, run the SETUP program from the CD.

The Setup guides the user through the various configuration choices, allowing the choice of keyboard, mouse, video card, network card, language, and which system utilities will be installed.
