Mareel - The Music

A wealth of wonderful music is provided in the Celtic tradition

Experience the mystical intrigue of Ireland

The music is drawn from many sources - very little of it was originally composed as harp music, with the exception of the music of the Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan. Some of the music drawn from the pipe and fiddle repertoire may have once been played on harps, but survives now on other instruments. Some of the music was originally vocal - both song airs and mouth music. I utilize a great deal of fiddle music, and am always looking for wonderful new tunes to translate to the harp.

I compose for the harp, and have written pieces for special occasions and in honor of people and events important to me.

A significant portion of my repertoire consists of music in the older traditions written by contemporary musicians, including Tom Anderson, with whom I studied in the Shetland Islands.

I am very interested in the stories associated with the music I play. Much of the Irish and Scottish repertoire has some association with particular people or places. It was important to me to visit some of these places to better understand the music. When I plan concert programs I try to share some of this background with the audience, often building the program around some general theme.

Music for Weddings

Wedding ceremony music is as varied as the couples who choose the harp for their weddings, and I prefer to work with each couple in making selections, especially for the marches and any special music. In some churches, it is also important to discuss the musical selections with the priest or music director ahead of time. For receptions and parties, a wider range of music is usually appropriate. This helps provide changes in mood and tempo, and reaches a wide range of musical preferences.
