A family legend says that our Suffolk County, NY, Howards are related to the 16th century Dukes of Norfolk in England. Two wives of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, were cousins and were nieces of Edward, 3rd Duke of Norfolk.
With more than 300 years between those Howards and my great-grandfather, David Andrew Howard, the search for a connection, if any, may take some time. Here is what I know about my Howard forebears, and the King and Finch daughters who became my great-grandmother and grandmother. I'm seeking information on David Andrew's parents and possible siblings, and similar details on Emma and Dorothea.
All three families lived in or near East Hampton, eastern Suffolk County. My great-grandfather was a fisherman; as a small child he is listed on the 1865 census in Southampton. My grandfather, John Michael, was a commercial fisherman as was his elder son, John David. Earlier generations may have lived in Connecticut or other parts of New England. The Howard family may have come from Ireland; the Finch family came from England after 1884.
