~ ~ ~ THE KING FAMILY ~ ~ ~

King families were on Long Island, NY, before 1700, according to "East Hampton History" by Jeannette Edwards Rattray. While King was not one of East Hampton's earliest names, the family came to Southold not long after that town's settlement. Daughters and sons in the King family of Southold and Oyster Ponds (later called Orient) married early into East Hampton families.

In East Hampton, founded in 1648, the King family first settled on the shore front at Three Mile Harbor and The Springs; one section of the latter village is called "Kingstown," and there is a King's Point at Fire Place. They have followed the water, both as fishermen and as whalemen.

My great-great grandfather Benjamin Gilbert King (1819-1872) was married first to Phebe A. Rogers in 1848; apparently they had no children. In 1851, he married Huldah Edwards Bennett of Three Mile Harbor.

My great-grandmother, Emma Sidenia King, who is said to have stood over 6 feet tall, was the daughter of Benjamin Gilbert (called by his middle name) and his second wife Huldah. The family, in which she was the fifth of 7 children, lived at Fire Place.

Emma married David Andrew Howard in 1880, when she was but 15 and he 18. I had thought he was a minister, but the 1900 census gives his occupation as "fisherman," and he is listed as "Capt. David Howard" in Mrs. Rattray's book. At that time, they lived on Buells Lane; whether that is in East Hampton or The Springs is yet to be determined.

Emma died during the flu epidemic of 1918.

Virtually all that I have learned about my King ancestors has been gleaned from "East Hampton History," whose author was editor of the East Hampton "Star" when I was a child in the 1950s.
