~ ~ ~ THE KING FAMILY ~ ~ ~

William King (1687/8-1775), in the second generation of Kings to be born on Long Island, was named for his father and great-grandfather. His grandfather Samuel King, born in England, arrived in Southold about 1651 from Salem, MA, with his widowed mother and several siblings.

The fourth-generation William married Bathsheba (1688-1764), daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Rogers Beebe of Plum Island. Their first-born, also a William, was joined by seven brothers and sisters. A brother James left Long Island for upstate New York, two others died as young men, and two sisters apparently died as children.

Sisters Hannah and Susannah both married; Hannah died in 1811 a few months short of her 96th birthday.

In 1738, the fifth-generation William married Elizabeth Beebe of Orient, who bore him seven children. Although their first son William married and had at least two young sons by 1800, it is through a younger brother Richard that the line descends.

The sixth generation Richard (1755-1797), born in Southold, came to Three Mile Harbor (East Hampton) and served as a soldier in the Revolution. Richard married Rachel Miller (1760-1838), daughter of George and Hannah Edwards Miller of East Hampton. According to "East Hampton History" by Jeannette Edwards Rattray, Richard and his wife Rachel "had a son on June 26, 1776 when Richard became a refugee to Lyme, Conn. [who] may have been the child who died August 27, 1783."

Not much is known about another son Nathan, but Mrs. Rattray's notes tell a wonderful, if tragic, story about son Benjamin Hubbard King. Born in 1793, Benjamin "served in the War of 1812; he fell off a load of hay on Newtown Lane, East Hampton, and died from the effects [February 28, 1856]; his name and the date of the accident were written on a post that stood there for years."

The seventh generation Richard, my 3rd-great grandfather and older brother of Benjamin, continues the King line. He also married a Rachel, daughter of Benjamin and Esther King Bennett, in 1810. Their six children included my great-great grandfather (Benjamin) Gilbert King (1819-1872), whose second wife and my great-great grandmother was also a Bennett.

In the ninth generation, my King line joins the Howard family with the marriage of (Benjamin) Gilbert's daughter Emma Sidenia King to my great-grandfather Captain David Andrew Howard. The information in "East Hampton History" does not indicate if Emma's brothers ever married or had children.
